Rugga Rural Story

The Origin

Months ago, I (Tom) and my mother travelled to a small town called Salawas in Rajasthan, India. We stayed in huts built from mud and cow dung with a warm, welcoming family who have lived there for generations. We shared meals with them and quickly became aware of the strong family bond and close-knit village community.

Salawas is best known for its handcrafted traditional rugs called dhurries. We fell in love with them not only for their beauty, but also for the time and effort poured into every single one. The weeks it takes to create each unique rug are filled with laughter, warmth, and conversation. We were lucky enough to sit cross-legged with the grandfather, who generously showed us the intricate weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations.

What really stuck with us was how the entire village is involved in the rug-making process in some way, shape, or form. Every rug that is sold helps the community preserve its traditions and techniques while creating a more promising future for the younger generation.

Tom & Joe

We are Tom and Joe, two mates who have always wanted to start a business together. The perfect opportunity came when Tom brought his first rug home after travelling through India and winning Race Across the World. We both fell in love with the rugs and the stories they carry, and we wanted to find a way to give back to the community that makes them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Now it’s time to find your perfect rug!
